If you have ever wanted to eat chocolate mousse for breakfast and feel completely good about it — this is your recipe. This plant-based chocolate avocado smoothie is one of the most indulgent tasting things to ever come out of our blender, and the fact that it is also one of the most nutritious makes it almost too good to be true. Rich, thick, impossibly smooth, and deeply chocolatey — it tastes like a decadent chocolate mousse that someone somehow turned into a drinkable breakfast. And the avocado? You would never know it was in there. Not even a little bit. It just quietly does its job creating that incredibly silky, creamy texture that makes this smoothie so extraordinarily good while adding a generous dose of healthy fats, fiber, and potassium that your body genuinely loves.

Like every smoothie recipe on Plant-Based Papa this one is built on our High Protein Plant-Based Smoothie Base — the nutritional foundation that takes every smoothie we make into a completely different league nutritionally. And the numbers on this one are genuinely jaw dropping. When made with soy milk this smoothie delivers a whopping 33.6 grams of protein in a single serving. Thirty three point six grams. In a smoothie that tastes like chocolate mousse. We'll give you a moment with that. On top of the protein it also delivers 9 milligrams of iron — which is over 50% of the recommended daily intake for adults — 486.1 milligrams of folate which is over 100% of the recommended daily requirement, and impressive amounts of calcium, potassium, magnesium, and omega-3 fatty acids that support everything from bone health and brain function to heart health and sustained energy. This is not just a smoothie. This is a complete, nutrient dense meal in a glass that happens to taste like dessert.

We use medjool dates as our natural sweetener of choice in this recipe and we highly recommend them — they bring a rich, caramel-like sweetness that pairs beautifully with the chocolate and avocado without spiking your blood sugar the way refined sugar would. Mama bear is not a fan of bananas so dates are always our go-to in smoothies, but if you prefer a banana sweetness feel free to swap one in, or add a drizzle of maple syrup to dial up the sweetness to wherever you like it. This recipe is completely customizable and delicious no matter which sweetener you choose.

One important tip before you blend — do not skimp on the ice. Unlike most of our other smoothie recipes which use frozen fruit to chill and thicken the smoothie, this one uses fresh avocado instead. That means ice is essential for getting the temperature and consistency right. Be generous with it and you will end up with a smoothie that is thick, cold, and absolutely perfect. Go light on the ice and you will end up with something that is more lukewarm chocolate soup — and nobody wants that.

Decadent. Nutritious. Ready in under five minutes. This chocolate avocado smoothie is the recipe that proves once and for all that eating healthy and eating deliciously are not mutually exclusive. Make it once and it will be in your regular rotation forever.

Notes & Tips

  • Since this recipe doesn't use sweet fruit, we highly recommend adding at least 3 dates to the smoothie for added sweetness.
  • If you don't have dates you can substitute either a banana or maple syrup to your desired sweetness. Adding banana to your smoothie will make it taste like banana though.
  • Make sure to use ice in this smoothie since we're not using frozen fruit, it needs something to make it cold!
